Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu by car is the headline Trans-Flores overland — around 650 kilometres of winding mountain highway from the Komodo coast to the three-coloured crater lakes above Moni. As of 2026 there is no direct bus or flight joining the two ends, so the sensible way to travel it is a private car with an experienced local driver, split across three to four days with overnight stops in Ruteng, Bajawa and Ende or Moni. One vehicle carries you and your bags the whole way, pausing at the rice terraces, volcanoes and blue-stone beaches strung along the road.
Komodo Car Rental is a Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport / LBJ) operator, so your driver starts where your Komodo trip ends and takes you east on the island’s only long-distance route. This page sits inside our wider Flores overland package by car, focused on the single most-requested run: reaching Kelimutu for sunrise.
How long does the Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu drive take?
Non-stop, the distance works out to roughly 13 to 15 hours of pure driving — impossible and unpleasant to attempt in one day on a road of constant switchbacks. Realistically you break it into legs, sightseeing as you go, and reach Moni (the village at the foot of Kelimutu) on the third afternoon so you can climb for sunrise the next morning. A typical, comfortable split as of 2026:
| Day | Leg | Approx. distance | Drive time | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Labuan Bajo → Ruteng | ~130 km | 4–5 hrs | Cancar “spider-web” rice fields, cool Manggarai highlands |
| 2 | Ruteng → Bajawa | ~130 km | 4–5 hrs | Ngada villages (Bena), Inerie volcano, hot springs |
| 3 | Bajawa → Ende → Moni | ~250 km | 6–7 hrs | Blue Stone Beach at Penggajawa, Ende, arrive Moni |
| 4 | Kelimutu sunrise → onward | — | — | Pre-dawn summit, then return west or continue to Maumere |
Tighter three-day versions exist if you skip stops, and unhurried travellers add a night for Wae Rebo or Riung. The route climbs through the Manggarai capital of Ruteng and the volcano town of Bajawa, each a worthwhile overnight in its own right rather than just a place to refuel.
Why does one car and one driver make sense for this route?
The Trans-Flores highway is sealed for most of its length but narrow, steep and relentlessly curved, with occasional landslip patches and thin phone coverage between towns. Public transport is a chain of slow, infrequent minibuses that do not connect end to end on any schedule a visitor can rely on. Keeping a single car and driver for the whole run removes the daily hassle of re-arranging transport, lets you stop for photos and warung lunches on your own timing, and — most importantly for Kelimutu — puts a driver who knows the road at the wheel for the 4am pre-dawn climb, when the final mountain bends are dark and often misty. Your luggage stays in one boot and you never repack between vehicles.
Which vehicle suits the Trans-Flores road?
For two to four passengers with luggage, a Toyota Innova or Innova Zenix is the comfortable default. For extra clearance on rough sections and during the rainy season (roughly November to March), a Toyota Fortuner is the safer pick. Small groups of five to twelve travel in a Toyota HiAce. All of these run chauffeur-driven; self-drive is not realistic on this terrain.
A note on electric cars (as of 2026): we offer EV rentals for Komodo Airport transfers and around-town trips, but public charging does not yet reach the Trans-Flores interior. For the Kelimutu overland we honestly recommend a combustion or hybrid SUV — an EV would strand you between towns. Save the electric car for your Komodo-side days near Labuan Bajo.
How do you book the overland car?
Booking is by itinerary, not by the hour. Message us on WhatsApp with your arrival date, group size, luggage and whether you want to return to Labuan Bajo or fly out from the far end. We confirm the vehicle, a driver who speaks working English, a suggested day-by-day plan and a single quoted price. Because Flores fleets are small and thin out in the June–September high season, book as soon as your flights and boat plans are set.
How much does a Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu car cost?
Pricing is quoted per trip, not per kilometre, and depends on the vehicle, number of days and whether you return or drop one-way. Indicative 2026 ranges, in US dollars:
- Full-day chauffeured charter: about USD 70–95 per day (Innova) or USD 95–130 per day (Fortuner), fuel and driver included.
- Three-to-four-day Labuan Bajo → Kelimutu overland, one-way to Moni or Ende: roughly USD 350–620 total depending on vehicle and inclusions.
- One-way drops usually add a positioning cost for the driver’s return leg.
- Kelimutu National Park entry is separate — around USD 10–15 per person, paid at the gate.
These figures are indicative only and exclude hotels, meals and park tickets; your final quote is confirmed in writing before you travel. Prices move with fuel and season, so treat the ranges as a planning guide rather than a fixed tariff. For the full breakdown see our car rental price list in USD.
Can you drive from Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu in one day?
No. The two ends are about 650 km apart on a mountain road that averages 13 to 15 hours of driving with no stops — dangerous and exhausting in a single push. Plan a minimum of two nights (three is more comfortable), stopping in Ruteng and Bajawa, so you reach Moni rested and ready for the pre-dawn climb.
What are the three colours of Kelimutu’s lakes?
Kelimutu holds three crater lakes — Tiwu Ata Mbupu, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai and Tiwu Ata Polo — that local Lio belief links to the resting places of departed souls. Their colours genuinely change over months and years, shifting between turquoise, green, brown and near-black as minerals in the water react. No one can promise a specific colour on a given morning, and that unpredictability is part of the draw. Sunrise from the viewpoint is the classic time to see them.
Is the road paved, and do I need a 4×4?
The Trans-Flores highway is sealed for almost its entire length, so a standard high-clearance SUV handles it well. A true 4×4 is only needed for side trips off the main road, such as the track toward Wae Rebo. In the rainy season we still lean toward a Fortuner for the extra clearance on patched sections.
Can I fly out from Maumere instead of driving back?
Yes, and many travellers do. From Moni it is a few hours on to Maumere, which has an airport with onward connections. Our Labuan Bajo to Maumere overland covers the full cross-island version; we simply drop you where your onward flight departs instead of returning west.
