A Flores overland package by car is a multi-day private road journey across Flores island, typically running west-to-east from Labuan Bajo to Maumere with a dedicated SUV or Toyota HiAce and an English-speaking driver-guide. Komodo Car Rental operates the full trans-Flores route — through Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende, Kelimutu and Maumere — with 3-, 4- and 5-day sample itineraries, one-way airport drop options, and honest all-in pricing quoted in US dollars (car, fuel and driver included).
We are the local operator, not a booking marketplace, so you deal directly with the team dispatching the vehicle. Komodo Car Rental is operated under Komodo Luxury, part of Juara Holding Group — operating from Bali across Indonesia since 2015.
What does the Flores overland route cover?
The classic trans-Flores drive links the island’s western gateway at Labuan Bajo with the eastern coast at Maumere, roughly 650 km of winding mountain highway. A private car lets you stop wherever you like, at your own pace. Typical stops, west to east, include:
- Labuan Bajo — start point and the gateway for Komodo. Pick-up from the airport (LBJ) or your hotel via our Komodo airport car rental.
- Cunca Wulang — a canyon waterfall a short detour inland from Labuan Bajo.
- Ruteng — cool Manggarai highland town, famous for the Cancar “spider-web” rice fields (Lingko) and, for trekkers, the trailhead area for the Wae Rebo traditional village.
- Bajawa — Ngada highland town near the Bena megalithic village, Inerie volcano and the Malanage and Soa hot springs.
- Riung — an optional north-coast detour for the 17 Islands marine area.
- Ende — south-coast port with the Blue Stone beach and the house where Soekarno was once exiled.
- Kelimutu — the three-coloured crater lakes above Moni village, best seen at sunrise.
- Maumere — the eastern finish, with its own airport (MOF) and Sikka-region beaches for the drop-off.
Which vehicles and drivers are included?
Every overland package is private and comes with a driver-guide who knows the mountain roads, fuel stops and viewpoints. Choose the vehicle by group size:
- SUV (Toyota Innova, Rush or similar) — comfortable for 2–4 passengers with luggage; the most popular overland choice.
- Toyota Fortuner — higher-clearance SUV for rougher detours such as the Wae Rebo trailhead.
- Toyota HiAce — for groups of up to about 12 people; see our Toyota HiAce rental for specs.
All overland trips can also be arranged through our standard car rental with driver service. For the long remote legs across Flores we recommend a diesel SUV or HiAce for range and reliability; a battery EV rental is better suited to short Labuan Bajo town transfers, where charging is available.
What do the sample 3, 4 and 5-day itineraries look like?
These are starting templates — every route is customised to your dates, interests and pace.
3-Day Express (Labuan Bajo → Maumere): Day 1 Labuan Bajo to Ruteng (Cancar rice fields); Day 2 Ruteng to Bajawa (Bena village, hot springs); Day 3 Bajawa to Kelimutu for sunrise, then drop at Maumere airport.
4-Day Classic: adds a night at Moni below Kelimutu and an Ende city stop — Day 1 Labuan Bajo–Ruteng; Day 2 Ruteng–Bajawa; Day 3 Bajawa–Ende–Moni; Day 4 Kelimutu sunrise, then Maumere.
5-Day Explorer: adds the Wae Rebo village trek or the Riung 17 Islands detour, giving a slower, deeper trip with extra highland and coastal stops before finishing at Maumere.
Can I do a one-way drop or reverse the route?
Yes. The package is built for one-way travel: start in Labuan Bajo and finish in Maumere, or run it in reverse from Maumere to Labuan Bajo. We drop you at either airport (LBJ or MOF) or your hotel. Because the car and driver return to base afterwards, one-way routes include a return-repositioning component in the quote — this is normal for trans-Flores drives and we state it clearly before you confirm. If you only need a Labuan Bajo town-based car, our sister service at labuanbajocarrental.com covers that separately.
How do you book a Flores overland package?
Booking is direct and simple:
- Message us on WhatsApp with your start point, dates, group size and preferred route length (3, 4 or 5 days).
- We confirm vehicle availability and send a written, itemised quote in USD.
- You approve the itinerary; we lock the driver and vehicle. A deposit secures peak-season dates.
- Your driver-guide meets you at the airport or hotel on day one.
How much does a Flores overland package cost?
As of 2026, indicative all-in prices (private car, fuel and driver) are:
- 3-day SUV overland (up to 4 pax): from about USD 390
- 4-day SUV overland: from about USD 520
- 5-day SUV overland: from about USD 650
- HiAce group overland: from about USD 180 per day
These figures are indicative and vary with season, exact route, one-way drop distance and vehicle. They typically include the car, fuel and the driver’s own meals and lodging. They usually exclude your accommodation and meals, national-park and village entrance fees (for example the Kelimutu ticket and the Wae Rebo trek), and optional local guides. We give you a firm, itemised quote before you commit — no hidden add-ons.
Is a Flores overland trip safe by car?
The trans-Flores highway is paved for most of its length but is narrow and winding through the mountains. Travelling with an experienced local driver-guide is the safest and most comfortable way to cover it, especially for the pre-dawn Kelimutu leg.
How many days do I need for Flores overland?
Three days is the minimum for a west-to-east crossing that still catches Kelimutu at sunrise. Four to five days is more comfortable and lets you add Wae Rebo, Riung or a slower pace between stops.
Do you include accommodation on the overland package?
The standard quote covers the car, fuel and driver. We are happy to suggest and help arrange hotels or guesthouses along the route, but room costs are billed separately so you keep full control of your budget and style.
Can the package start or end at Komodo Airport?
Yes. Most guests start with an airport pick-up at Labuan Bajo (LBJ) and finish at Maumere (MOF), or the reverse. Just tell us your flights and we align the schedule.
